Ten effects of watching Breaking Bad

So I binge watched all of Breaking Bad these past couple weeks and below you’ll find what has happened to me and will happen to you.(Because if you haven’t seen it yet, you will.)

As a follow up to my post from Monday I present the best part of my week. This video is fantastic and deserves multiple viewings. It might be the best live action TMNT we get for a while.

Turtle power going sour in new film

Anyone who knows me, even for a brief period of time, would know I absolutely love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.(or Hero Turtles for our friends across the pond.) I cannot remember a time in my life where I didn’t love those lean mean green mutants. I had both the ’87 cartoon and all three films on VHS as a kid and I assure you those videos were played quite regularly. I remember going into my local comic book shop when I was younger with one of my missions being finding those original Eastman/Laird black and white comics. So when I heard about Paramount was rebooting the franchise I was cautious, but excited.

That excitement has diminished quite a bit since that announcement. I’ll admit I was a bit worried about Nickelodeon’s acquirement of the franchise, but so far it’s gone quite good. The comic from IDW is utterly fantastic and a perfect blending of the movies, cartoons and comics in one package that serves as a wonderful love letter to the mythology. Also, while haven’t seen too much of it, the new cartoon seems to be a good gateway to the franchise for kids and seems respectful of the characters. Everything I hear from the new film is the complete opposite of this.

First there was the announcement that Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes would be producing it. While this is better than Bay actually directing the film, it is just marginally so. Platinum Dunes has never really produced a satisfying blockbuster. They’ve just stuck to reviving horror franchises such as Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. It seems now they are moving on from sucking horror franchises dry to all franchises.

Even with Platinum Dunes producing, I felt maybe a director would come on with passion for the franchise or at least a vision for the film like Singer had when he first come on X-men. That does seem to be the case as they’ve hired Jonathan Liebesman, a man who has given us such gems as Battle:Los Angeles and Wrath of the Titans. Even after that I tried to keep a positive attitude towards the film. It was going to be the first live action TMNT in 20 years, so that had to count for something, right?

Well then came the words “alien race” out of Michael Bay’s mouth at a Nickelodeon presser and soon the fans made their concerns heard. Bay quickly retracted the statement, but I was already ready to check out. That feeling further expanded when I read about the leaked script. That script is probably one of the worst adaptations I’ve ever read about. Now I’m not one of those fans adverse to changes from page to screen. I love What Nolan did with the Batman franchise and he took quite a few liberties and X-men: First Class created continuity errors and I thought it was brilliant. When those films had that this script clearly lacked was that in those films the characters and situations felt true to the spirit of the worlds they were adapting. This script might as well be about some other alien race because it felt completely different from the TMNT. I would give the details here as they are gruesome, but a simple Google search will lead you to it, if you so dare.

After all this I heard the film was delayed and the script being rewritten. I thought maybe they heard the backlash and decided they should put genuine effort into this film instead of making it a blatant cash grab. But I was not rewarded for my faith for recently Megan Fox was cast for the film and it seems it was for the ever important role of April o’ Neal. This, to me is a clear indication of where this film is going, especially since they skipped over more talented actresses like Jane Levy and Anna Kendrick to cast Megan Fox. This film is obviously going to fit more into the G.I. Joe/ Transformers mold than the Iron Man/Spider-man mold. I don’t ask much of my comic book films. All I ask for is the two Fs, fun and faithful. It’s a shame the TMNT(or TAMT it seems.) won’t be getting their due anytime soon. Well I guess it can’t be too bad, let’s just picture this film for a minute…..

God help us….

Young Han Solo? I’ve got a bad feeling about this…..

By now everyone knows Disney has bought the rights to Star Wars and Lucasfilm in general.(and pretty soon they’ll own the film rights to all our lives.Just because they can.) Unlike a few other fans, I welcomed this changing of the guard and I have faith in Disney to be respectful of the franchise. After all they’ve done a great job handling the Marvel properties by basically leaving Marvel Studios be and cashing the checks.

I’m excited at the prospect  of a new trilogy and fully support the hiring of Abrams, a self-admitted Star Wars fan.(I’d like to point out that while they aren’t the best films, I am not a prequel detractor. Could they have been better? Of course. But people who think they are the worst films ever need to reevaluate their film criteria.) But I am a bit apprehensive about the prospect of spin offs. I think Disney wants to apply the Marvel method of film making to the Star Wars franchise and why not? It certainly has worked out for them so far. But that line of thinking might not apply to Star Wars.

In my mind and I’m sure in the mind of several others, a Star Wars film is an event. Every time one has been released(Let’s not count that Clone Wars nonsense.)it  has been a pop culture happening. Anticipation is always at a fever pitch. It’s going to be the same when Episode VII is released. But what I fear with spin offs is the idea that we might see a Star Wars film every year. I personally think that takes some luster off the franchise and may dilute the brand. You always want the audience to be wanting more not needing less.

That isn’t to say I’m completely opposed to spin offs. I just think Disney and Lucasfilm should carefully plan each one out and ask themselves whether they can tell a good story as opposed to making one because they need a tent pole that particular summer. I think we can actually get some pretty great films out of some them. In fact, two of the three spin offs rumored so far intrigue me. The first, a proposed Yoda spin off, I would actually look forward to.Yoda died at 900 years old and we’ve barely scratched the surface of his history in the films. Now let’s slow down. I don’t want to see Yoda as a padawan as I think an origin story would take away from some of the allure of the master Jedi. But a film that illustrates Yoda as a fierce warrior who earns the rank of master?sign me up!

Then there is the rumored Boba Fett spin off. Another winner in my book. This is something fans have been clamoring for and even Joe Johnston has expressed interest in directing. Boba Fett is a character that can be plugged into several different scenarios and provide an entertaining outcome. Finally, however, is the spin off I feel could be disastrous, which is a young Han Solo film. Why am I opposed to this one while supporting the others?Simple. Yoda is CGI, Boba Fett is a guy in armor, but Han Solo is unquestionable Harrison Ford.

I have a hard time imagining anyone piloting the Millennium Falcon but Harrison Ford.(Maybe Billy Dee Williams, but that is beside the point.) Asking any young actor to fill in that vest is a tall order. They is a high probability of backlash, even more so than the prequels. If I were Disney I would steer clear of this project completely. To me, too much could possibly go wrong. So, that’s my take on the possible Star Wars spin offs.Agree?Disagree? Let me know. I want this blog to be open to all opinions whether they are mine or not. Until next time, May the Force be with you.

Geek Musings Episode I: A New Blog

So as someone who enjoys writing and enjoys talking about everything geek culture, I saw wordpress as a good opportunity to perhaps build an audience and just share my opinions on fictional universes that have no bearing on our real lives.(or so some people would have you believe.) Here I look forward to blogging about comic books, film, music, books, video games, pop culture happenings and the like. If I feel inclined I might blog about other things that are happening in the world, but I want to keep this light and fun seeing as we all need a little escapism now and then. In closing, I hope you enjoy this blog and if we’re all lucky, you readers will read one of my epic rants about plot holes and awful character moments. I assure you, you’ll get quite the laugh out of it.
